HONOR GUARD

This page is dedicated to the memory of:
Sargent First Class Dick Mickelson

SFC Mickelson was an avid leader and supporter of Lake Minnetonka VFW Post 5919. He was a U.S. Army soldier who served in both World War II and Korea.

Dick loved his country and had intense respect for our red-white-blue flag.  An enforcer of discipline with kindly manners, SFC Mickelson was the driving force in originating our Post Honor/Color Guard unit. He commanded the Post Honor/Color Guard unit for many years.

He participated in more than one hundred military veterans last rites, an outstanding commitment to the uniform. Sadly, Dick Mick passed away on September 22, 2013

 Honor Guard

The Department of Defense and the Veteran’s Administration authorized the VFW to conduct military funeral honors at a veteran’s last rites services.   A three-volley rifle salute, along with taps, and presentation of a folded flag to a member of the family completes the formal ritual.   This ceremony is for any veteran, whether or not they are a VFW member.
